Slack is our main communication tool. We use it to reach out to students one on one, provide assignment feedback, make announcements, etc. It is crucial that you pay attention to and interact with Slack on a regular basis. This is especially important for online students where Slack will be your main form of communication with us. Please have Slack installed on your desktop and phone with notifications turned on. We do not take "I didn't see it on Slack" as a reason to miss information.
Slack is an extension of class time interaction. We expect that you adhere to all proper netiquitte and professional behavior. All usernames should be your full name, all display names should be your full name and you should have a profile picture uploaded that clearly shows your face (nothing obscuring/no group photos/distance pictures). Additionally, creation of public channels needs to go through Jake Seever before their creation. As a rule, what you say in Slack is the equivalent of saying it out loud in a class room.
When you join Slack you will be added to channels for your classes. These channels are to be used to communicate with your peers to search for help, ask clarifying questions and see announcements.
If you are enrolled in a Software Development track you will be given your own "feedback" channel, sometimes referred to as your "f channel". This channel is a place where you will receive feedback from your instructors/IAs, can ask questions, point out issues, etc. Most if not all communication will take place in this channel. When communicating in this channel/seeking help we would prefer a few rules be followed:
Please be respectful and forgiving of our time. During a semester we have many students and many conversations happening at once on Slack so brevity, conciseness and clarity are highly appreciated.
The ITec (room A134) is a collaborative space where students can go to work together, rent laptops, get tutoring, and meet with instructors or IAs. There are breakout rooms for group work and anyone from any degree can come in. When you visit the ITec please make sure to sign in when you arrive.
We encourage all students (virtual, online or otherwise) to use this space. We have seen that students that spend more time on campus tend to be more successful in their time at NTC.

We encourage ALL students (virtual, online or otherwise) to join in person classes. We have found that the more classroom interaction students have had the better their experience is. You do not officially have to be enrolled in an in-person section to attend it.
