0.5 Check Your Computer Specifications

Overview

In this assignment, you will determine the computer hardware, operating system, and Internet connection you are working with. Complete this assignment on your personal computer while connected to your home Internet connection, not from the Virtual IT Lab.

The source directions are written for Windows, but the same goal applies to macOS and other personal computers. Ask your instructor if you need help locating equivalent system information on a different operating system.

1. Review the Hardware and Internet Recommendations

These specifications are recommendations for the best experience. Lower specifications may affect your ability to complete the course effectively.

A working webcam and microphone are required for this course and many later courses.

2. Determine Your Hardware and Operating System

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Locate This PC and open its Properties. On current Windows versions, this may open Settings > System > About.
  3. Locate the operating-system version, installed RAM, and processor information.
  4. Capture one screenshot that clearly shows the system-specifications page or window.

Save the screenshot somewhere you can find it again. Do not include product keys, device identifiers, or other information that is not needed to verify the basic system specifications.

3. Determine Your Internet Connection Quality

  1. While connected to your home Internet connection, visit TestMy.net.
  2. Choose Test My Internet, then run the Combined test.
  3. When the test finishes, capture one screenshot showing the completed speed-test results.

Compare the result with the recommended minimum of 20 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload.

4. Submit Screenshots to Canvas

Submit the following screenshots directly to Canvas. Each screenshot must be readable, include enough surrounding context to verify the required evidence, and avoid unrelated or sensitive information.

  1. Your computer system-specifications screenshot showing the operating system, processor, and installed RAM.
  2. Your completed Internet speed-test screenshot showing the test results.
