Overview/Purpose

You are in charge of your campus unified communications network. You are upgrading your network from a simple router based solution (Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express) to a more complex, scalable solution using virtual servers such as with Windows Server 2012 Enterprise server (where DNS, DHCP, and usernames will reside), Cisco Unified Communications Manager server (CUCM - the phone server), Cisco Unity Connection server (CUCS - the voice mail server), and Cisco Unified Presence server (CUPS – the presence server). So, with all of this hardware and servers, you must plan and document your solution, and while your at it, configure your router and switch as well as configure your IP addresses (DNS and DHCP) on your campus Domain Controller.

Learning objectives:

  • Design network address parameters.
  • Design user security settings.
  • Design naming conventions.
  • Configure network infrastructure based on design.

Target Competencies:

  • Design the network and server infrastructure for a Unified Communications campus
  • Implement router and switch configurations

Learning activities:

  1. Define and document your campus network IP address scheme, VLAN, and naming conventions (PAT 1-1: Network Design)
  2. Configure your campus router and switch based on your design criteria (PAT 1-2: Device Configuration).
  3. Configure DNS and DHCP in Windows 2012 for campus devices based on network design criteria (PAT 1-3: IP Configuration).

Assessment Activities:

  1. PAT 1-1: Network Design
  2. PAT 1-2: Device configuration
  3. PAT 1-3: IP Configuration
